は vs ほ — HOW TO TELL THEM APART
These two Hiragana lookalikes are the most commonly confused characters by Japanese learners. Here is how to distinguish them instantly.
CHARACTER #1
は
/ha/
CHARACTER #2
ほ
/ho/
Key Anatomical Differences
- は (ha) has ONE horizontal stroke on the right, and the vertical stem goes through it freely.
- ほ (ho) has TWO horizontal strokes on the right, and the vertical line does NOT cross through the top bar.
GOLDEN MEMORY TRICK:
Remember: 'HO wears a Hat (top bar) that covers its head; HA has no hat.'
